Gardening

Recently I was discussing the future with a friend and having fun with all the optimistic thoughts one tends to have when discussing the future these days. And my friend remarked "well I'm not concerned about growing food. I know I can grow food." I chuckled because I used to know that I could grow food. After all, I'm good with plants and although I historically lacked the attention span to keep my garden going enough to get a good harvest, I had the concept down. If I suddenly NEEDED a harvest I knew how to make it happen.

Then one year I decided that I was going to actually grow some food. I don't remember what it was exactly that made me suddenly interested in actually producing a lot to eat from the yard but it probably doesn't matter. What matters is that I produced the most important thing ever that year: the harsh realization that I had no idea how to grow my own food.

It's really common to think that food production isn't a big deal. As children we sprout beans on towels in bags and in our imagination just extrapolate that up to chili. When our tomato plants die because we forget to water them we assume that they would have continued to live if we hadn't forgotten. We disregard the few clusters of lackluster berries in the brambles because we've got zucchini coming out of our ears, dontchano?!  Few of us really notice what a tangled web of failure and idiocy and bad luck home gardening really is.

With a grocery store available to us it's hard to care. But the fact is that few people can actually take seeds, start them, get the plants to maturity and producing, keep them adequately watered and pest free, protect the ripening crops, then harvest a reasonable amount of food. Not to mention saving seeds for next year. Plants that we eat are fussy buggers. I'm too hot I'm too cold it's too dark oh God the light is burning me I'm starving too much food oh never mind I'm just going to die. (Meanwhile the weeds are like "oooo a crack in the sidewalk! Noice!")

It takes study to understand soil/nutrients. It takes innovation to keep up with ever changing weather. It takes dedication to keep things going. If you are going to grow food you need to practice. And practice. And more practice. And I feel much more comfortable getting all this practice in while I can still run to the grocery store.
